Establishment of BOGF
Founded in 1890, Belilios Public School (庇理羅士女子中學) was the first government English school for girls in Hong Kong. Ever since she was set up, BPS has educated and nurtured many passionate and responsible girls and contributed invaluably to the building and development of our society.
In 2005, a group of dedicated alumnae gathered together and established Belilios Old Girls Foundation (BOGF) to provide extra support for their alma mater. The goal is not only to produce better graduates from BPS but also to ensure Hong Kong will have stronger candidates for better future development and growth.
A Council was formed to promote and pursue the work of BOGF. Committees were also formed to look after specific issues. All Council members are entrusted with the responsibility to determine which activity should be supported by BOGF funds.
BOGF is a registered charity under Section 88 of the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance, and donations made over HKD100 would be tax-deductible. Receipt could be issued for any donation amounts to or over HKD100.
Funds under the management of BOGF
With the generous support of friends and benefactors, several funds have been established.
General Fund comprised of a pool of funds from which only income accruing will be used and the capital will be preserved.
Other funds included the Music Fund (to support student’s music activities and instrument replacement), the Exchange Fund (to subsidize overseas study programmes), I.T. Fund (to fund the employment of an addition staff) and Campus Fund (to subsidize campus development and renovation).
Activities organized by BOGF
2010 was BPS’s 120th Anniversary. BOGF organized a series of events to celebrate this important milestone of BPS, including the publication of 120 Years Memoir and the setting up of 52 permanent scholarships to benefit the school in the long-term.
English Speaking League, a continuous programme started in 2010 offers precious opportunities for BPS girls to get in touch with foreigners in a comfortable environment after-school, so that their oral skills can be improved and horizons widened. The list of league leaders includes: Sir David Akers Jones, Sir Roger Lobo, Sir T.L. Yang, James Blake, Stephen Selby, Helen Seaton, Anthea Strickland, Junri Konii, Gillian Tong and Laura Dodwell. 80 students were benefitted each year and the League would continue to expand so that more girls could join this meaningful after-school activity.
In 2012, BOGF organized the Creative Writing Competition. Hundreds of Chinese and English writings were collected and winners were selected by a judging panel formed by BPS old girls. All winning essays would be published at the end of the school year and be distributed to the entire school as the year memento.
